ChokeFree™ is a unique trademarked and patented Shoulder Collar™ with a patented Vel-Lock™ Closure The original ChokeFree™ does not put pressure on the pet's trachea or windpipe. There are similar step-in designs that claim to be non-choking/choke-free but they may still place pressure on the pet's windpipe and cause choking and gagging. The center portion of our soft smooth one-piece patented ChokeFree™ design touches the pet in-between the pet's front legs, whereas the other Step-In harnesses touch the pet's forechest area rather than in between the pet's front legs.
Due to the wide variety of colors, sizes, leather styles and quantities, ChokeFree™ Pet Shoulder Collars may need to be made to order.
ChokeFree™ Pet Shoulder Collars match the circumference of the pet’s chest they will fit. ChokeFree™ is currently available in twenty one sizes to fit pets whose chest circumference behind the front legs measures from 8" to 28". An 8" ChokeFree™ will fit tiny pets that weigh approximately 2 pounds. A 22" ChokeFree™ will fit a pet such as a good size Cocker Spaniel. A 28" ChokeFree™ will fit a pet that measures 28" around the chest behind the front legs.

Size and Measurement of the ChokeFree Shoulder Collar is easy.
Wrap a measuring tape around the pet just behind the front legs. The tape should not be loose or tight and should provide the pet with a comfortable fit. If the tape is wrapped snuggly around the pet, it may be best to select the next size up in order to make sure the ChokeFree Shoulder Collar will be comfortable and not too tight. It should be noted that ChokeFree is made out of leather and due to the natural characteristics of the leather, ChokeFree will soften and become more flexible and conform to the pet's shape. It is important for ChokeFree not to be too large once it has been worn and softened. The Shoulder Collar should be fitted such that the pet does not have enough room to pull out of the collar. ChokeFree sizes match the circumference of the pet's chest behind the front legs. Measurements taken behind the pet's front legs should allow for a comfortable fit and not be tight. A good rule of thumb is to snugly measure the pet's chest circumference and add an inch to allow for comfort.

Typical Breed Sizes:
The preferred method of selecting the proper size ChokeFree is to try it on the pet. ChokeFree should be fitted such that it allows enough room to be comfortable without allowing so much room that the pet can back out or otherwise wriggle out of the shoulder collar. In order to size ChokeFree without the pet, a measuring tape should be placed around the pet just behind the front legs and an exact measurement should be noted. An additional one inch should then be added to the exact measurement to allow for comfort.
A pet that measures an exact 14” behind the front legs should fit into the 14” ChokeFree, but the shoulder collar would most likely fit snuggly and the additional inch usually provides enough room to allow for comfort.
Many pets do not fall into the typical size ranges and some are smaller and some are larger; however, the following general information regarding pet sizes is provided as a ballpark measurement for some various breeds.
Please note that the ChokeFree Shoulder Collar Pet Restraint is very simple to put on and take off and is not recommended to be worn all of the time. Even though there are those who never remove the ChokeFree Shoulder Collar from their pet, it is meant to be worn only when needed for restraint.
